HOPE’S GIFT by Kelly Starling Lyons, illustrated by Don Tate

What a superb introduction to the Emancipation Proclamation for today’s readers, revealing what it meant to children and their families when it was passed 150 years ago.  Lyons shows how the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation affected everyone, not just our main character, Hope.  Somehow, in the few words of a picture book format, she manages to craft a character who obviously cares about those around her, no matter who they are.  She also doesn’t shy away from the fear and worry and sadness of the time — or the bravery and determination that kept hope alive.  Don Tate’s child-friendly artwork supports and enhances the emotional power of this story.  We are rooting for Hope and her family from page one and rejoicing at the end as they journey down the road to a freer, albeit still uncertain future.  What we can be sure of, though, is that this family, these people, will not give up in claiming their freedom and will persevere because of their strength, dignity and, above all, hope.

Kelly Starling Lyons has also written the acclaimed books TEA CAKES FOR TOSH, ELLEN’S BROOM, and ONE MILLION MEN AND ME.  You can visit her website for more information about her and for book trailers.

Don Tate has illustrated at least a couple of dozen books, including SHE LOVED BASEBALL by Audrey Vernick and DUKE ELLINGTON’S NUTCRACKER SUITE by Anna Harwell Celenza, as well as writing IT JES’ HAPPENED: WHEN BILL TRAYLOR STARTED TO DRAW (starred reviews).  See his website for more information and a book trailer.
