Latte … stones

No, it’s not the coffee kind of latte.  It’s the name for the stone found on a number of Pacific islands, including Guam, that held up the homes of the rich and famous–or at least, the wealthier members of the community.  Others lived in huts on the ground, but the advantage of the elevated housing was safety from flooding [and you can imagine other potential critters, including possible food storage since rats wouldn’t be able to get up the curved bowl like top].

Now it’s a symbol of Chamorro culture, and you can find it it on signs, in all kinds of artwork, in the shapes of bus stops, and in everyday use, like this, one of my favorites, that also incorporates the seal of Guam:
