Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

I’m so proud of my husband.  He brought this into work today because he was so appalled that the Texas school board banned this book.  Since you’re not at his office to ask why, here’s the background:

Someone on the Texas school board found out that Bill Martin wrote a book called ETHICAL MARXISM.  Without doing research or fact checking (yes, this was the Board of EDUCATION) they banned BROWN BEAR, BROWN BEAR, WHAT DO YOU SEE?  Did it matter that the book on Marxism was an unrelated nonfiction book for adults?  No.  Did it matter that they were banning a book based not on the book but on a different book?  No.  Did it matter that the other book was written by a different Bill Martin?  No.  Wait!  A different author??  Yes.  Remember that point about research / fact checking?  Zero!  Which is what I give the Texas Board of Education–a failing grade.

Note:  Texas libraries and homes and I’m sure many other places in Texas DO have this book.  It’s just the Board of Education that has banned it.  Ah, those subversive libraries.  What would we do without you?  Early library proponents Benjamin Franklin (founding father) and Andrew Carnegie (capitalist) would be proud.  You see, it’s not an issue of liberal or conservative.  The issue is freedom of thought.

  1. Props to your hubby. That’s an incredible story.

  2. An outrage. Kneejerk reactions to anything are suspect, but you would think there would be some sensitivity to banned books committees in today’s supposedly all-embracing world. They can build mosques at ground zero but ban a book based a gross error in fact checking.
