Our souvenir of St. Sophia’s in Kiev (now Kyiv), the capitol of the Ukraine, from our visiting Kyiv Symphony Orchestra clarinetists, Viktor and Vitaliy. Delightful guys who made their own beds, breakfasts, and diplomacy. Impressive English skills and, when we were stuck for words, there’s always charades, right?
They’re traveling the east coast and I highly recommend catching the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Here’s their (grueling) schedule. If you can go see them — better yet, host them — you won’t be sorry. Classics, folk songs and, my favorite: Ukrainian singers in their native costumes rockin’ to American Spirituals. :o) And insight into our culture: “No people walking. Everyone drive? Everywhere?” Um. Pretty much.
We also got some great CD’s as souvenirs. As Ladysmith Black Mambazo sings, “Music has no boundaries.”
